They offer something for everyone in the family, no matter the skill level! I always tell people, the hardest part of this sport is stepping on the mats. Once there, the coaches and fellow team mates are there to help you. It's a great way to learn new skills, get focused, sometimes let out frustrations after a long day, all while having a great time. You will learn more things about yourself than you ever would off the mats. And I promise you, you will leave your first class with a smile on your face and an eagerness to come back to learn more.
We train as a family, so both my husband and I are on the mats as often as we can, while my children train and/or teach nearly every day! Not many sports out there allow both children and parents to do the same sport. It's a great way for a family to get out to do something together.

I've been going to this gym for about 9 months now and can't emphasis enough what an excellent gym this is. It's really the coaches that make this gym and my experience with every single one of them has been incredible.
The training itself is excellent. Classes are structured really well and the coaches are great at explaining techniques in a way that actually makes sense. They focus on the details, make corrections when needed, and create an environment where you feel like you’re constantly improving. After 9 months here, I can honestly say I’ve learned a ton and become much more confident in my skills.
Absolutely recommend this gym to anyone in the city.

Surge is an absolutely fantastic gym! I was starting out with BJJ in my late 30's and Surge was a fantastic place to do it, and I'm very excited to bring my kids here when they're older. I've been going there for the last 5 months, and I can say for sure that the instructors are super talented and knowledgable, the other students are friendly, the whole community as a whole is very supportive and welcoming, the facilities are clean, the schedule has lots ways to join, and the community overall is just all good vibes. I highly recommend it.

Surge is an absolutely fantastic gym! I was starting out with BJJ in my late 30's and Surge was a fantastic place to do it, and I'm very excited to bring my kids here when they're older. I've been going there for the last 5 months, and I can say for sure that the instructors are super talented and knowledgable, the other students are friendly, the whole community as a whole is very supportive and welcoming, the facilities are clean, the schedule has lots ways to join, and the community overall is just all good vibes. Our family absolutely loves Surge MMA. Both of our kids have been attending classes here for a while now, and the community, energy, and fun they experience each week are unmatched. Whether it’s regular classes, camps, or special events, everyone at Surge is so welcoming and genuinely dedicated to what they do.
We recently hosted a birthday party there and were blown away by how thoughtful and seamless the whole experience was. From the moment we reached out to book, the team took care of everything. To our surprise and delight, we arrived to find the space kindly decorated in our son’s chosen theme, and the coaches went above and beyond to keep the kids entertained and engaged the entire time (no small feat with a room full of 4-6 year olds!). Plus, getting to cut his cake with a katana was pretty epic 🙂
It was such a relief to be able to relax and actually enjoy the day, knowing everything was handled. Our son came home saying it was “the best day ever,” and we couldn’t agree more.

An absolute wonderful place for our kiddos and even adults to be at! I highly recommend. We have to take summers off due to being out of town for the summer and I truly see a difference from my little guy not going once a week like he is used to. My daughter wanted to take a break and then recently expressed how much she missed it and will be returning soon! 😊 great coaches, wonderful owners, super family oriented and very friendly environment. Great place for our kids to learn discipline, respect, patience and burn energy in a safe way. Also there is even a yummy ice cream joint beside their business and is a wonderful incentive!

The coaches are very nice and are good at what they teach. They make the classes fun while also teaching techniques. The people at the dojo are also kind and helpful.

(Update edited version current/past mixed)I had one of the greatest martial arts experiences in my return to training from being in a mentally sick state of mind that broke me down enough that I gave up hope on life after putting my beloved only Dog down to his resting place. My first training session was with “coach Nicky” the level of compassion and understanding accompanied with knowledge he shared to teach me plenty detailed things I didn’t know about striking that was Safe, Fun, and rewarding with new knowledge. They practice what they preach at this gym It is a team and community I’m privileged and grateful for the opportunity to train with .All the staff and trainers I’ve had a pleasure meeting and just getting to know. Thank you! “ they are a great support system to help me out with the tools and knowledge they teach me from their craft. Being in a room with so many people with power and control made me intimidated more of my self-esteem very much because I had lost hope and gave up or thought I did. However through the coach's understanding and influences I have started to learn and accept my fears come with the things we love most. I haven't learned much but I embrace the energy the team shares with me.
I can look forward now for not what's guaranteed but because no matter the calculation I can't predict it so I'm enjoying this new present. still having the noodle dream but I hope one day I can show my stripes lol.

As a complete newcomer, I was looking for a gym that provided a safe, encouraging environment in which I could learn new techniques while improving my fitness. I can’t speak highly enough of coaches Fred, Ashley and the amazing community at Surge MMA from who I’ve learned so much from in such a short period of time. No matter what your level, objective or background is, there is something for everyone. Highly recommend!

I was looking for a place to continue training consistently for quite a while, and to keep evolving forward on my martial arts journey, and I am so thankful to have found the great folks at Surge MMA.
Fred is in a league of his own, not only with his coaching and expertise, but also as an outstanding individual as well. When he tells you good job, you can tell he truly means it, and he wants to see you do well and improve.
You’ll find a great group of individuals here, who all have a passion for martial arts, and progressing forward, and who all have the biggest smile on their face while doing so.

Nothing brings me more joy than seeing the smiles on my children's faces training with the amazing Fred Stonehouse at Surge MMA. I travel across the city through rush hour traffic from Stittsville to bring my kids to this gym. It is always worth it. I should also mention I love training there too. Fred is a brilliant Martial Arts instructor, the best in Ottawa hands down, and I cannot recommend him enough. If you live East End, check out Surge MMA, you won't regret it.
